The two-storey rear addition to this house provided a combination of additional living
space, family bathroom and laundry, parent’s retreat and a new outdoor dining room
and deck. The L-shaped living area allows for a separation of the sitting and dining rooms
with the kitchen tucked neatly into the rear corner, so as not to intrude into either of these
spaces.
The two storey part of the addition has been kept to the southern boundary to allow a
large double height space over the indoor and outdoor dining rooms and to allow north
light to enter the main bedroom and living space. Large built-in seats provide additional
storage and seating whilst keeping the spaces uncluttered.
The second storey part of the addition is clad with timber battens to emphasize the
horizontal rather than the vertical and thus break down the scale of the addition when
viewed from the back garden.
The choice of fabrics, light fittings and colour scheme was included as part of the overall
design services and has resulted in a cohesive and well finished project.
