// PROJECTS: Alterations & Additions

ALEXANDRIA

This project was for a builder we have collaborated with on several other projects. The design added a second storey, steel framed addition to the rear of an existing terrace house. The new addition is behind the existing roof ridge and provides a master bedroom, wardrobe and bathroom as well as a second bedroom, study and additional storage.

The living room, opens the house up onto a covered timber deck, pool and courtyard. The west-facing glazed rear elevation allows light, sun and ventilation to enter the internal spaces, but excludes summer heat by means of the cantilevered roof over the deck and the use of an adjustable external aluminium blind. The northern elevation on the first floor has been pulled back from the party wall to allow a wall of glass louvres to provide light and ventilation to the bedrooms, bathroom and stairwell, whilst maintaining complete visual privacy.

The high standard of finish, details and simple palette of materials combine with the architectural design to make this house a sophisticated, inner-city dwelling that uses every square inch of space available without compromising on architectural integrity.
