CASTLECRAG
This house is located within a Conservation Area, adjacent to one of the remaining Walter Burley Griffin houses and overlooking a large reserve.
Sitting within the trees the house is a unique solution that respects the values and importance of the Griffin conservation area whilst serving the need for modern family living.
The existing 1940's house was single storey, brick, of little character and bore no relationship to the street. By retaining the existing house it was evident this would be sufficient to accommodate the bedrooms, whilst providing a solid masonry base for a new first floor. This allowed the Living areas to be raised amongst the trees to capture views to Middle harbour.
The butterfly roof is a distinct form, and articulates the horizontal nature and unusual geometry of the original house. The roof form allows light, ventilation and views to the sky and tree-tops on each side of the house while maintaining privacy from the neighboring houses. The combination of soft weathered grey timber cladding, natural timber floors upstairs, bluestone floor tiles downstairs and a neutral palette of paint colours, ensure this house is at one with its setting.
