Situated on a steeply sloping site this house gives rise to spectacular views overlooking the ocean.
The brief was concise, but called for flexibility in its use. An extended family was to be accommodated, independently of the main living areas when required, while serving as a comfortable home for the owners at other times.
Designed over three levels the building is expressed in two distinct forms. The main living spaces are united under a single roof plane that lifts up to the view, capturing the eastern sun and sea breezes. Louvred screens to the side walls maintain privacy from the neighbouring houses, while opening to a wider view.
The owner’s bedroom suite and study is articulated in a timber clad box sitting above and behind the main pavilion, gently nestled into the natural rock forms to the top of the site.
Separate accommodation with a living area for the family is situated under the main living pavilion, and may be accessed either through the house or by its own entry. Located above the garage the house sits independently. A rooftop garden provides a visual separation from the street, articulating the forms and reducing the scale.
Building materials have been selected to be in harmony with the landscape. From the solidity of elongated sandstone blocks to the soft grey of the textured cladding they combine to create a relaxed home for beach side living.
